Carol Swinney
Plein Air-Pallette Knife Artist

Carol Swinney lives on a large cattle ranch outside of Casper, Wyoming where she was born and raised. Her companions include a horse, several dogs and cats and the diverse wildlife that she sees everyday. This environment, fostered by her family's love of the outdoors and the cattle ranch life, gave her a deep rooted love of the West, its wildlife, people and landscape. Carol works primarily on location which she feels is essential to capture the correct lighting and colors as well as the essence and feelings of the moment. All her work is in oil and done exclusively with a palette knife with use of brush only for needed detail on animals and architecture.

Carol Swinney paints with a palette knife instead of a brush for many reasons.  “I love texture, and love to see a lot of paint on the canvas.  A painting knife gives rich colors and amazing depth, like you’re sculpting a painting”, she says.  “I’m always using clean, pure colors without any risk of muddy colors.  When you’re out on location you’re wasting time cleaning brushes.” Swinney prefers to paint on location at such places as Point Lobos State Reserve in CA, the mountains near Tucson, AZ or the Grand Teton Mountains in WY.

The well traveled artist has won numerous awards and honors for her work as well as many solo shows and group exhibitions over the past several years. Carol has received over 10 awards during 2005 and 2006 including 2 Best in Shows, 3 People’s Choice awards and Best Landscape at the 2005 National Oil Painters of America Show. “Arts for the Parks” National Art Contest has included 17 of her paintings over the past several years as well as numerous one woman shows and museum exhibits. She was also included in the National Museum of Wildlife Art’s “2006 Western Visions Miniatures and More” exhibit in Jackson, WY.

Carol was the Artist-in-Residence at the National Museum of Wildlife Art in Jackson, WY in January 2003 and was one of the ten finalists in the 2002 International Artist magazine’s Annual Landscape Competition as well as “Jury’s Top Fifty” from the Salon International 2003 show.  She has exhibited her work consistently at National OPA Exhibitions and has exhibited in the last 4 California Art Club’s Annual Gold Medal Juried Exhibitions held at the Pasadena Museum of California Art. She was featured in the May/June 2006 issue of Art of the West magazine as well as articles in past issues of The Artist’s Magazine, Southwest Art and Art Talk. She was on the cover of the March/April 2004 SkyWest Magazine and the 2005 cover of “Landscape Highlights” by American Artist with a re-printing of her 2003 article. Wildlife Art News featured her in an article titled “Expressions of the American Landscape” in the May/June 2004 issue and she was included in the book How did you paint that? 100 ways to paint landscapes, published by International Artist with a feature article scheduled for a 2007 issue.

Carol is an Artist Member of the CAC, LPAPA, TPAPS and a signature member of the RMPAP, OPA and American Woman Artists.
